Day 52 - Oxford

Today the Olympic Torch  takes a high- jump over the towering spires of Oxford. Known for its classical architecture, the cover of  this book from MoDA shows Oxford Replanned in post-war Britain.

Oxford Replanned by Thomas Sharp, London: Architectural Press for Oxford City Council, 1948, Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture,  JMR349
With its unfurled paper, modern print of the Radcliffe Camera and ribbon bearing the title of the book, this cover is all about progress and newness. It's a big departure from traditionally austere books about Oxford and its architecture, which have focused on somber photographs or prints of the cities colleges and chapels.
For 1948, this is a pretty radical and daring cover design!
