Enid Marx, textile designer

The work of Enid Marx, is currently on show at the Pallant House Gallery, in Chichester, in what looks like a great exhibition. Even if you haven't heard of her, you will probably be familiar with her work, as she was a designer, illustrator and printmaker, whose work featured on - amongst other things - upholstery fabrics for London Underground, such as this one:

The design of tube seats is something that most people have never thought about: but it's important to get it right, otherwise the pattern, combined with the motion of the train could induce 'dazzle', or nausea!

MoDA holds only a few examples of textiles by Enid Marx, but we also have a number of wallpapers designed by her contemporaries, including Edward Bawden and Peggy Angus. The wallpaper designs of these and other artists feature in one of MoDA's publications, A Popular Art, published in 1990, but still an important contribution to the history of wallpaper and wallpaper design. We still have a few copies available to order, and our sale continues until the end of February.
